Many, many years ago I received a cardigan sweater from my parents that they picked up on a trip that they had taken. It almost appeared to be hand knit, was super warm and being cream color it went well with everything. Unfortunately, it shrunk…even following the directions of hand washing…I have saved it all of these years knowing one day I would Up-cycle that Sweater to a Pillow, filled with warm memories!
Here’s how to make your own:
Step 1:
Determine what part of the sweater you want to use to create your pillow. I choose to hand stitch up the bottom edge of the sweater with 3 strands of floss, starting on each side and meeting in the center to be sure that it was all even.
Step 2:
Cut the sweater where you prefer for the size of pillow you want to create. I chose about an inch below the arm hole.
Step 3:
Turn the sweater inside out and hand stich the cut edge in place, so as not to loose any stitches. If you do not have a buttoned front, be sure to leave an opening for turning.
Step 4:
Machine stitch the cut edge to reinforce the hand sewing. You do not have to machine stitch the finished edge that was hand sewn.
Step 5:
Measure the size of your pillow and then, cut a piece of muslin, double in size, to create an insert for the pillow. Sew the muslin together leaving an opening for turning.
Step 6:
Fill the insert with Poly-fil using the stuffing tool, if needed. Stitch opening closed.
Step 7:
Place the insert into the Pillow then, button up the Sweater to a Pillow.
Determine which side you prefer to display.
