This year I wanted to add a patriotic star book filled with quotes about Freedom and America to my collection.  And today I am happy to share with you my Freedom Star Book tutorial.

Freedom Star Book

I LOVE handmade books! Star books are one of my favorite types of books to create. They can be created in any size and/or theme.  It was such a fun book to create and went together so quickly that I made a bunch of them as Independence Day gifts for friends and family.

Follow along and create your own star book. You do not have to use the measurements that I used (my measurements are based on the size needed so that I could use the “campaign” button as the focal point on the book cover.

Whatever size book you want to make will work as long as you keep in mind the ratio of 1-1 ½-2 or large, medium and smaller……..and that a star book has 5 sections…..more on this below.

Supplies:

  • 5 pieces of red cardstock: 5” x 10”
  • 5 pieces of white cardstock: 5” x 9”, piece large enough for die cut frame
  • 5 pieces of blue cardstock 5” x 8”
  • 1 each 24” piece of ½” sheer organza ribbon in red, white and blue
  • 1’2” Scor-Tape™
  • Double sided foam tape or dots
  • Patriotic “campaign” button
  • Computer generated patriotic quotes (5 different ones)

Tools:

  • Scor-Pal #4 (love the new 1/8” version)
  • Westcott® Personal paper cutter and scissors
  • Spellbinders’ ™Grand Calibur II™ die cutting    machine
  • Die: Spellbinders’ ™ S5-083 Antiques Frame & Accents

Instructions:

  1. Die cut the frame from the scrap of white card stock.
  2. Computer generate and print with blue or red ink 5 patriotic quotes. Tear the edges of the quotes to fit inside the folded pages.
  3. Score and fold all of the red, white and blue card stock in half.
  4. Create 5 signatures (groups of pages). Apply  Scor-Tape™ to the inside  edges of the  red and white pages Nestle the folded pages with red on the outside, white in the middle, and blue on the inside. Line up each pages’ edge, remove the tape liner and attach the 3 pages to each other at the edge only.Freedom Star Book
  5. Attach the 5 signatures to each other with several pieces of Scor-Tape™ between each red page.
  6. Add the 5 patriotic quotes to the blue pages.Freedom Star Book
  7. Layer the 3 pieces of ribbon and tie a loose knot in the middle. Attach the tied ribbon onto the front and back covers with small strips of Scor-Tape™.
  8. Layer and attach the “campaign” button on top of the die cut frame to the middle of the front cover with double sided foam tape.
  9. Display the star book open with the ribbon tied together.
