Since I’ve had this clock movement sitting in a drawer for a really long time now,  I thought it was high time I made another clock, so here is my Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock.

Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock

In keeping with my promise to work with only what’s in my stash, I made a large wall clock covered with burlap and seashells.

Slowly but surely, I’ve been snipping away at a huge bolt of gray burlap that I’ve had since doing a burlap craft challenge last summer. I think it has a nice beachy feel, so I decided to work with a bunch of shells and sand dollars that I had used recently to fill an etched glass vase. Feels so good to #craftyourstash, doesn’t it?

Supplies

  • Large Smoothfoam disc
  • Gray burlap
  • Small and large shells
  • Mini sand dollars and sea glass
  • Pearl-head straight pins
  • Wire cutter, scissors, craft knife
  • Tacky glue or low-temp hot glue gun, duct tape
  • Clock movement with large hands

Instructions

  1. Mark the center of the Smoothfoam disc and poke a hole through with a scissor tip. Score a square into the foam with the craft knife, around the edge of the clock movement (make sure the hanging notch points to noon), then score the square into smaller sections and carve out about 2/3 of the depth. This allows the clock movement to sit in closer to the front face of the clock. Make sure the top half of the bolt (down to the brass threads) comes all the way through to the front.Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock
  2. Cut a circle of burlap 6-8″ larger than the disc. Place the disk face down on the burlap and wrap the burlap tautly around to the back. Secure with pearl-head straight pins (insert into the foam at an angle), leaving the excess burlap like a ruffle between each pin.
  3. Fold each ruffle flat and insert a second round of pins to secure. You could opt to wrap and secure the burlap to the disc with a hot glue gun if you prefer. I just happened to have a big assortment of pins I wanted to use up.Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock
  4. Turn the wrapped disc over, and snip away a bit of burlap in the center, where the hole is for the bolt of the clock movement.
  5. Place large shells at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, then place medium shells at the hours in between. Add clusters of smaller shells and sea glass to each “number” on the clock. When you like your arrangement, push a small pearl-head pin (snip down to 1″ long first) into the cluster, to help prevent the weight of the shells from stretching the burlap when hanging on the wall.Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock
  6. Glue all the shells into place and let dry. Put the clock movement in place on the back and push the bolt through to the front. Secure with duct tape, leaving the battery compartment uncovered.Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock
  7. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to screw the hour, minute and second hands into place on the bolt. Add a battery and hang your clock on the wall.[Tweet “#Howto make a beautiful Seashell and Burlap Wall Clock tutorial by Lisa Fulmer #craftyourstash #crafts “]
