Supplies/Tools:

  • 20g bare copper wire
  • 26g dark annealed wire
  • 5” copper plated brass textural straight bar chain
  • 17” etched copper coated steel chain
  • 10” hand-dyed silk ribbon
  • Eight 20mm x 12mm dyed dragon vein agate beads
  • One 26mm puff heart pendant
  • One 20mm copper wire hook clasp
  • Two 5mm copper jump rings
  • 11 links of plain large link copper coated steel chain
  • Chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, wire cutters
  • Chasing hammer
  • Optional: metal colorant/patina

Instructions:

  1. Cut 2.5” of 20g copper wire and form a simple loop on one end using round nose pliers. String one dragon vein agate bead onto the wire and make another simple loop.  Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 links.
  2. Take a 6” piece of 26g dark annealed wire and wrap it 5 times around the top loop of one of the bead links and then diagonally pull wire to the other end of the link and wrap the wire around the bottom loop. Try to make the wrapped wire a bit “messy”, so it doesn’t look perfectly coiled, and be sure to hide the end of the wire at both ends of the link.  Repeat with 3 more of the bead links.  You should now have 4 links with the 26g wire wrapped on them and 4 without.
  3. Cut the dyed silk ribbon into 2 equal pieces. Thread 1 piece of the ribbon through one of the plain large copper coated steel links and fold over approximately ½”.  Using 10” of the 26g dark annealed wire, wrap the folded-over ribbon end with the wire, again a bit “messily”.  Repeat on the other end of the same ribbon segment, and then repeat with the other piece of ribbon.
  4. Optional step: Color the links and the toggle clasp using the metal patina, rinse, and let dry. Wipe off excess darkener using a clean, dry cloth.
  5. Add the hook clasp to the link on one of the pieces of ribbon and hook it through the link at one end of the second piece of ribbon.
  6. Connect the bead links using single links from the large link chain between each bead link, alternating the plain and wire-wrapped bead links, using the chain nose pliers.  Then connect one end piece of the beaded link “chain” to each end of the ribbon piece.  Right now you should have what looks like a complete necklace of the beaded chain and ribbon with the clasp in back.
  7. Connect the heart pendant to the link between the 4th and 5th beaded links.
  8. Attach the 17” etched chain length to the end bead link on either side of the necklace. The etched chain should now hang below the heart focal.
  9. To add another layer of interest to the necklace, attach 12.5” of the straight bar chain to the same end bead links on either side of the necklace using the 5mm jump rings. This chain should hang on top of the heart focal.
